On 1 February 2013, the part of the Business Investment group that administers the business R&D investment programme of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (previously MSI) will become part of a new Crown agent—Callaghan Innovation.

This new entity aims to better connect New Zealand firms with science and technology, in order to drive the innovation and commercialisation of products and services and economic success.

This means that all TechNZ schemes (Technology Development Grant, Technology Transfer Voucher, project and capability funding), Futureintech and the Global Expert search service will transfer to Callaghan Innovation.

Callaghan Innovation aims to assist businesses with their research and development challenges. To do this, it will initially include all staff from Industrial Research Limited and parts of the Business Investment group from the Ministry. Over time, other relevant elements will be incorporated, such as New Zealand Trade and Enterprise’s ‘Better by Lean’ programme.
